Universal Truth

Universal Truth

fibonacci-sunflower“There are only two mistakes one can make along the road to truth; not going all the way, and not starting.”

A few years ago I learned about the golden ratio and Fibonacci numbers. The Fibonacci sequence begins with the numbers 1 and 2. Here is how the sequence works:

  • 1 + 2 = 3
  • 2 + 3 = 5
  • 3 + 5 = 8

And you keep going, adding the last two numbers of the sequence together to get the next number.

The golden ratio is a mathematical phenomenon that I really can’t describe, but it is found in the Fibonacci numbers. When you divide two adjacent numbers in the sequence, especially the further down the sequence you go, the result is the golden ratio number of 1.61

  • 21/13 = 1.61

The golden ratio can be found everywhere in nature. It is found in leaf patterns, facial proportions, seed heads, shell designs and tree branches. The golden ratio creates a natural truth about what is beautiful. In every sweeping glance of our natural word we are blanketed with examples of what we have come to know as beautiful symmetry.

I believe there are universal truths about our human character. Like the golden ratio, they are whole-heartedly revered as beautiful.

We rally around those people who whole-heartedly live and express these universal truths through their character. Nelson Mandela lived forgiveness and unification. Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King lived courage in the face of oppression. Mother Theresa and the Dalia Lama live(d) compassion. Pope Francis lives humility.

What ignites spirit, at work and everywhere else, is finding your own universal truth and ‘going all the way’ with it. What is your character expressing and living – what is your universal truth?
